Capital Planning, Construction & Maintenance

To help ensure students are in safe and welcoming learning environments, Capital Planning, Construction & Maintenace oversees 71 buildings (68 schools and 3 administrative sites) and more than 8 million gross square feet of area.

These facilities-- another name for buildings and land--must also go through periodic renovations to ensure modernization keeps pace with the evolving learning needs of students.

When looking at how best to improve its facilities with limited resources, MPS considers a school community’s educational needs, health, safety, operations, environment, and the maintenance of existing assets that support student development.

Facility improvement projects fall under two broad categories:

1. Capital Improvements: Include significant renovations and remodeling to buildings and ground, or upgrades to key systems such as adding new security equipment or heating, ventilation and air conditioning.

See the overall Capital Plan Budget and the list of current and planned capital improvement projects.

2. Maintenance: Ongoing work to repair and maintain facilities to keep them running efficiently and in acceptable condition. For example, replacing a school’s roof or boiler.
